Both on Easter Sunday, and on Monday the day after, Portland Police Bureau officers are dispatched to shootings – one in Centennial, and one in Lents.

It was an unusually active start to the week for Portland Police Bureau (PPB) officers in outer East Portland. On Easter Sunday, they were sent to a shooting near Parklane Park – in what they later described as a confrontation between people who knew one another

The next afternoon, a block east of Walker Stadium in Lents Park, officers again rushed to the scene of a shooting – this time, finding a wounded victim.

Exclusive: Easter Sunday gunfire erupts near Parklane Park

Although gunshots had been fired nearby, it still looked peaceful in the Centennial neighborhood’s Parklane Park on Easter Sunday.

On Easter Sunday, April 5, at 6:11 p.m., dispatchers sent PPB East Precinct officers to a “Shots Fired” call on the 1500 block of SE Main Street, along the southern boundary of Parklane Park in the Centennial neighborhood of outer East Portland.

A dozen officers had originally been dispatched – but, when they got there, everything looked surprisingly normal – with kids playing, and families picnicking.

An officer finds and saves physical evidence in Parklane Park.

A couple of PPB district cars were parked at the south end of the park, near SE Hawthorne Court. Officers appeared to be wrapping up — and, not long after they’d arrived, police cruisers were driving away.

“Officers responded to a report of shots fired in the area of Parklane Park,” confirmed PPB Public Information Officer Terri Wallo Strauss to East Portland News.

“The officers learned there was a confrontation between two people known to each other,” Wallo Strauss continued. “At the scene, officers did find evidence of a shooting, but no one was injured.”

Easter Sunday celebrations continue in the park.

No suspect was located, and this is currently an open investigation. If you have information about this incident and haven’t talked with police, send your information to crimetips@police.portlandoregon.gov, and refer to Case No. 26-97640.

Victim wounded in shooting near Lents Park

In the Lents neighborhood, officers stand watch, looking up at an apartment on SE Schiller Street, east of 92nd Avenue.

The next day, Monday, April 6, just after 5:36 p.m., PPB East Precinct officers were sent to another reported shooting to the 9300 block of SE Schiller Street, near the apartment buildings where the roadway dead-ends into SE 93rd Avenue.

Along the Multi-Use Path, between SE Schiller and Liebe streets, officers and their vehicles are stationed in hopes of taking an armed person into custody.

Many officers were stationed on SE Schiller Street near an apartment building, repeatedly looking up toward an upper unit.

This officer flies an observation drone over the apartment complex, looking for the suspect.

Even more officers were staged one block south, along SE Liebe Street, where they’d blocked off the roadway on the west end and the Multi-Use Path on the east end, and were flying a surveillance drone overhead as part of the investigation.

This incident stayed “on the map” well into the late night hours, with numerous officers still at the scene past 11 p.m.

Looking east from SE 92nd Avenue, along SE Liebe Street, officers keep watch from their vantage point along the Multi-Use Path.

Again, PPB PIO Terri Wallo Strauss later provided these details to East Portland News: “East Precinct Officers responded to an injury shooting. Arriving officers found a victim who had non-life-threatening injuries.

“Officers rendered medical aid, and the victim was taken by ambulance to a local hospital,” she reported. “Officers located casings – and a knife – but did not find a suspect. [However,] the investigation continues.”

Into the evening hours, officers continue investigating the case, and looking for the suspected shooter.
