From warrant service in Centennial to shooting calls in Montavilla and Sumner, officers and specialized teams spend much of August 5th tied up on gun work in outer East Portland.

On Thursday, August 5th, Portland Police officers responded to two new gun-involved calls in outer East Portland and, and on the same day served a warrant in an earlier armed robbery case.
The day’s work ranged from a man shot in the arm, to a negligent discharge that injured a gun owner, to the arrest of a robbery suspect accused of pointing a firearm at a victim on SE Powell Boulevard.

Armed robbery in Centennial as victim unloads groceries on S. E. Powell

According to information from the Portland Police Bureau (PPB), East Precinct officers contacted a man on May 28, at about 8:00 p.m., after he reported that he had been robbed at gunpoint roughly two hours earlier while unloading groceries outside his home on SE Powell Boulevard near 150th Avenue in the Centennial neighborhood.
Officers determined that two suspects had taken groceries from the victim’s vehicle before he confronted them.
Victim confronts pair, faces gun during struggle
When the victim challenged the suspects, they tried to run, and a physical struggle followed. During that confrontation, the male suspect allegedly pointed a firearm at the victim, while a female suspect tried (but failed) to steal the victim’s vehicle. The victim recovered the stolen groceries before the pair beat a hasty retreat, and he was later transported to a hospital for evaluation.
The PPB’s Major Crimes Team took over the case, identified a suspect and suspect vehicle, and obtained both arrest and search warrants as the investigation progressed.
On Wednesday, August 5, the Bureau’s Special Emergency Reaction Team and Crisis Negotiation Team served those warrants at a residence on SE 112th Avenue, between Powell Boulevard and Tibbetts Street. During their search, investigators found and seized three firearms.

Robbery suspect booked into MCDC on gun charge
There, officers arrested 49-year-old Danay R. Reed, Jr., of Portland. Reed was booked into the Multnomah County Detention Center (MCDC) at 8:47 a.m. on charges of Robbery in the First Degree, and Felon in Possession of a Firearm, and he’s now behind bars, held without bond.

Man shot in arm near NE 81st Avenue in Montavilla

Later that same day, on August 5, at 6:38 p.m., officers were dispatched to a shooting reported near NE 81st Avenue and Clackamas Street, according to dispatch information from the Portland Bureau of Emergency Communications.
Patrol officers, along with members of the Focused Intervention Team and the Enhanced Community Safety Team, responded to the area.
PPB Public Information Officer Sergeant Kevin Allen told East Portland News that officers learned that an adult man had been shot in the arm. The victim went to a hospital by private vehicle, declined ambulance transport, and was reported to have non-life-threatening injuries.
The suspect vanished before officers arrived, and there were no immediate arrests. The shooting remained under investigation at the time of this report.

In Sumner, accidental shot on NE Wygant Street injures gun owner

At 9:28 p.m. on August 5, PPB North Precinct officers and other first responders were dispatched to NE Wygant Street at 90th Avenue on a report of a shooting.
Sergeant Allen told East Portland News the injury was determined to be the result of the negligent discharge of a firearm. The gun owner was testing a new holster when the firearm went off and injured his hand.

The man was taken to a hospital by ambulance for treatment. Police determined that the self-inflicted injury was not a crime.
Busy day of gun-related responses for officers
Between serving a high-risk warrant, responding to a wounding, and documenting an accidental discharge, officers spent much of August 5 focused on gun-related crimes in outer East Portland.
Investigators are still following leads in the robbery and the shooting, while keeping the negligent discharge on the books as an accident.
