Fortunately this year, the need for “Weekly Shooting Reports” has considerably abated. Yet, some days, there are still several “Shot Fired” calls, to which Portland Police Bureau (PPB) officers and specialty units respond.
Saturday, May 17, was the day this week that saw six “Shots Fired” calls, and two actual shootings where victims were sent to the hospital to be treated for gunshot wounds. Here are those stories:
May 17 – 9:23 p.m.
Victim wounded in Hazelwood sidewalk shooting

With many local residents out on a street lined with apartment buildings, in the Hazelwood neighborhood, officers string up more and more police tape to keep folks out of the crime scene.
The PPB East Precinct officers who were dispatched to this “Shooting-with-Weapon” incident on May 17 at 9:23 p.m., on the south side of the 11900 block of SE Ash Street, arrived to find many people out enjoying a Saturday night.
They also found one who wasn’t enjoying it – a wounded individual on the sidewalk, in front of an apartment building.
Watch as PPB officers, and Forensics Division workers, collect evidence at the latest shooting scene:
It didn’t take long for a total of 26 officers, including three police dog teams, to fill the street with vehicles, blocking SE Ash Street eastward to 122nd Avenue.

Standing behind the crime scene tape, these residents take a look at the evidence remaining after this shooting took place.
A small party continued outside of the apartment building where the shooting had just taken place. The revelers casually stood next to the red police tape that cordoned off where a person was shot that evening.
Those in the gathering watched as PPB Focused Intervention Team (FIT) members and Forensic Division investigators marked evidence, and took crime scene photos.

Our photograph taken from two blocks away, shows the staff from the PPB Forensic Division document the scene of the shooting.
“Officers who responded to this call determined there was an altercation between two people, leading to one person firing a shot at the other,” PPB Public Information Officer Sergeant Kevin Allen told East Portland News the next day.
“The victim was shot in the leg; but the individual’s injuries do not appear to be life-threatening,” Sergeant Allen said.

On into the night, officers continue to gather evidence at this outer East Portland shooting.
The suspect had fled by the time police arrived, and even the keen nose of a police dog couldn’t track down the suspected shooter – who was most likely picked up and rushed away in a vehicle by a friend on the next block.
“So far, the suspect has not been located,” Sergeant Allen informed. So, the investigation continues. If you have information about this case, provide it via email to crimetips@police.portlandoregon.gov and reference Case No. 25-129408.
UPDATED: May 17 – 10:55 p.m.
Little is revealed about a shooting in Lents’ ‘planned community’

A passing rainstorm doesn’t hinder officers, as they investigate a shooting in this Lents neighborhood development.
As the investigation at the Hazelwood shooting wound down, some of the officers and investigators began to peel off, heading almost due south, into the Lents neighborhood on a second “Shooting-with-Weapon” call, dispatched at 10:55 p.m. The location was the 11600 block of SE Flavel Street, on Mt. Scott.
See what we were permitted to video of the aftermath of this shooting, as the investigation begins:
Officers not familiar with the area asked dispatchers for directions, because the shooting took place inside “Portnomah”, a swanky but non-gated, 61-home private neighborhood development – designed with several cul-de-sacs at the end of winding streets – all of them unhelpfully named “SE Flavel Street”.
As officers and investigators arrived, a storm front moved in — first with mist, then sleet, and then pouring rain.

Police vehicles fill the narrow street as officers begin an investigation into this shooting.
“With the shooting victim, it’s ‘touch and go’, as we await word about the medical status,” an officer on the scene told us.
We also learned from another reporter that a suspect was thought to have teen located near SE 136th Avenue and Foster Road. See UPDATE below!

Officers form an investigation plan, while standing near red crime scene tape that marks the area of the shooting.
“Officers responded to this call and determined one person had been shot; [at this point] the injuries do not appear to be life-threatening,” Sergeant Allen commented about this incident.
UPDATE September 19, 2025
On September 19, a PPB Public Information official updated information about this shooting.
Officers located an adult male suffering from numerous gunshot wounds. Officers immediately rendered life-saving aid until emergency medical personnel arrived. The victim was transported to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries. Fortunately, the victim ultimately survived his injuries.
During an area search for the suspect, officers observed a vehicle speeding on SE Foster Road. The vehicle was briefly lost but later located unoccupied. Officers deployed a drone in an effort to locate the vehicle’s occupant(s), but nobody was found. Detectives from PPB’s Enhanced Community Safety Team (ECST) and Forensic Evidence Division responded to investigate. Through their efforts, detectives identified a 17-year-old male suspect.
On Thursday, September 18, 2025, ECST members located and arrested the now 18-year-old suspect, Jomonee Jerome Foster, of Portland. Foster was transported to and booked into the Multnomah County Detention Center (MCDC) at 5:19 p.m. that day on the following charges, both Class A Felonies: Attempted Murder in the Second Degree and Assault in the First Degree.
Currently, Foster is being held in the MCDC on $100,000 bail.
Again, this investigation continues. If you have information about this case, provide it via email to crimetips@police.portlandoregon.gov and reference Case No. 25-129464.
