A late-night police pursuit from Central Southeast Portland ended in a rollover crash on an Interstate 205 offramp Thursday, April 30, when a fleeing BMW SUV sideswiped a pickup and sent its driver to the hospital, the Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office (MCSO) reported.

Deputies said the chase began around 9:30 p.m. after the BMW nearly hit one of their own SUVs near SE Grand Avenue and Harrison Street, then sped away eastward. The route the driver took from Central Southeast Portland to I-205 in outer East Portland was not revealed, but deputies said the pursuit continued onto the freeway, before the crash on the SE Stark Street offramp.

According to the MCSO, the driver of the white BMW refused to pull over, and deputies initiated a pursuit, based on his reckless driving before the attempted traffic stop. Officers from the Portland Police Bureau and TriMet’s Transit Police joined in, and law enforcement tried several pursuit intervention tactics as the BMW continued northbound on I-205.

As the suspect vehicle moved toward the SE Stark Street exit, it sideswiped a black pickup, causing it to roll, investigators reported.

Paramedics took the pickup driver to a hospital with serious, but non-life-threatening, injuries.

The BMW’s driver was later identified as 30-year-old Casey Dan Padula.

Deputies booked Padula into the Multnomah County Detention Center (MCDC) at 1:45 a.m. on May 1st on charges of felony attempt to elude, reckless driving, felony driving while suspended, failure to perform the duties of a driver (hit and run), and four counts of reckless endangering.

At his arraignment, prosecutors added a charge of third-degree assault. Padula was then taken back to jail in the MCDC, without bail.
