The weather turned cold, with sleet and rain sweeping over outer East Portland, on Saturday night, May 17. That was when a pedestrian was struck by a Honda on SE Foster Road, near 86th Avenue.

At the crash scene, officers notice evidence that they’ll later catalog as part of the investigation.

But, when they arrived, officers found a white Honda Accord sedan, with smashed-in windshield, stopped in the westbound lanes of SE Foster Road at the curb. Apparently, the driver of a car not involved in the incident, had stopped behind the Honda.

It came out that the pedestrian was apparently crossing SE Foster road, from south to north, in the middle of the block, when struck by the oncoming car.

“Officers who responded to this call determined an adult male pedestrian was struck by a vehicle,” PPB Public Information Officer Sergeant Kevin Allen later confirmed to East Portland News.

An officer talks with the driver of the vehicle that apparently accidentally struck the man jaywalking across a dark section of SE Foster Road in the rain.

Officers remained at the scene with the driver until receiving information from their dispatcher that this crash was not fatal – and that the PPB’s Major Crash Team wouldn’t be dispatched.

“The pedestrian was transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries,” Sergeant Allen added. “While this [crash] appears accidental in nature, and the driver was not cited for it, [nonetheless] the driver was cited for driving while suspended and uninsured,” he said.

Into the night, this crash investigation continues.
