After dark on Saturday, September 6, a motorcycle slammed into an SUV along SE Foster Road, just west of 62nd Avenue – on the on the Foster-Powell side of the street; Mt. Scott-Arleta is on the south side of Foster Road, which marks the neighborhood dividing line.

Within four minutes of being dispatched to this crash at 8:03 p.m., the first of a dozen Portland Police Bureau (PPB) officers pulled in. They, and other officers as they arrived,  found a badly damaged motorcycle in the traffic lanes, its rider lying motionless in the street,m and a Subaru Outback SUV with front and passenger side damage, stopped in the north side of the intersection.

Watch as the investigation begins in this crash that left a motorcycle operator unconscious.

Several patrons at Bar Maven, located at that intersection, said they believed that the Outback was eastbound on Foster, and turning north into 62nd – and was struck by the westbound motorcycle.

One of the first PPB Traffic Division’s Major Crash Team officers to arrive at the scene and looks over the smashed motorcycle, lying in SE Foster Road.

The PPB Traffic Division’s Major Crash Team was summoned to investigate the crash.

“According their the report, the driver of the Subaru Outback was traveling eastbound on SE Foster Road, and stopped in the middle/turning lane before 62nd Avenue,” PPB Public Information Officer Terri Wallo Strauss told East Portland News after the investigation concluded.

“The driver reported she thought the lane was clear and initiated a turn [to the north],” Wallo Strauss continued. “About halfway into the westbound Foster Road lane, she felt something hit her car, and pulled over.”

The smashed motorcycle and damaged Outback remain in the street, awaiting the arrival of crash investigators.

“Witnesses said the motorcycle rider was traveling westbound and was unable to avoid the vehicle turning, and crashed into the front passenger side,” Wallo Strauss said. “The motorcycle rider was unconscious at the scene.”

That rider was rushed by ambulance to a trauma center with life-threatening injuries. “And, he was cited for driving while suspended,” the PPB spokesperson revealed.

Perhaps this motorcycle can be repaired; hopefully the operator will recover from his injuries.

The driver of the Subaru was not injured. She was cited for making a dangerous left turn,” concluded spokesperson Wallo Strauss.
