On the otherwise lovely Thursday, October 22, the tranquillity of the afternoon was shattered by what Centennial neighbors said were ten to fourteen gunshots in the vicinity of SE 174th Avenue, south of Haig Drive, a bit after 3:30 p.m.

Shortly thereafter, Portland Fire & Rescue Station 31’s Engine Company commander reported back to dispatchers that the suspected gunman was seen running eastbound on SE Haig Drive.

This street is closed off as the shooting investigation is underway.

This area is on the eastern edge of Lynchwood Park, and close to Powell Butte Elementary School – although they’d already dismissed for the day at 2:57 p.m. On the west side of the street is Centennial High School – it dismisses at 3:10 p.m., when some students would be heading to their track and football stadium located there.

The good thing, officials said, was that no students or faculty members were injured.

Not only was a teenager wounded in the shooting, but windows in vehicles parked in the nearby Centennial Schools Bus Yard were shattered.

Portland Police Bureau (PPB) East Precinct officers were dispatched to this “Shooting-with- Weapon” at 3:39 p.m. “Additionally members of our Focused Intervention Team also responded to a shooting,” Public Information Officer Sergeant Kevin Allen told East Portland News.

“Arriving officers found a 19-year-old male victim with a gunshot wound to the torso. He was transported to the hospital and treated,” Sergeant Allen continued. “His injuries are not life-threatening.”

Into the afternoon, this shooting investigation continues.

The street and surrounding area were cordoned off as the PPB’s Enhanced Community Safety Team was called in to investigate this shooting. The perpetrator was not located at the time, but police are working behind the scenes to locate and arrest the person with the gun.
