It started off with Portland Police Bureau (PPB) North Precinct officers being dispatched to a “Disturbance-Priority” call on June 6 at 3:43 p.m. – just north of the Parkrose High School campus. But it ended up with a man with a pistol being seriously wounded by a Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office (MSCO) deputy.
Officers were looking for “two men fighting” in the 4600 block of NE 116th Avenue, between Prescott Street and Sandy Boulevard. The officers quickly found one of the persons identified in the call and briefly detained him for questioning – but no crime victim was found, so he was released. [This was PPB Incident No. 25-150233]

A few minutes after officers logged out of the disturbance incident, they’re back on the same street — this time looking for a man shooting a gun.
Then, at 5:06 p.m., officers were sent back to that same block, this time on a “Suspicious-with-Weapon” incident. Officers were told to look for a man out in the street, holding a gun, who had fired a shot. Hearing the radio call, an on-duty Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office Patrol Deputy driving in the area pulled in to assist.
As additional officers were arriving, the neighborhood reverberated with the sound of more gunshots.
Shirtless man points gun at officers
The MSCO deputy worked with PPB officers as they told the bare-chested man with the gun, standing in the middle of NE 116th Avenue just south of Sandy Boulevard, to drop the weapon and surrender. Instead, the suspect pointed his pistol at the uniformed law enforcement officers.
“I was shocked to see this white guy with long hair, shirtless, wearing jeans, with what looked like a gun in his right hand was just standing there, pointing the gun at the police,” a neighbor later told East Portland News.
“I heard only one shot, and the guy went in the middle of the road – and then obeyed police who told him to push the gun away from him,” he added.

Providing information to news reporters near the scene, this is PPB Public Information Officer. Sargeant Kevin Allen.
“The MCSO deputy fired a round from his patrol rifle – and the suspect dropped the gun,” confirmed PPB Public Information Officer Sargeant Kevin Allen, speaking to reporters.
“Officers called in emergency medical services, and then they moved in and provided trauma first aid until the ambulance arrived,” he said – adding that the suspect was seriously injured, and his prognosis is unknown. “His identity is not being released at this time.”

Both of the PPB’s Mobile Command Units park on NE Sandy Boulevard as the investigation begins.
The Portland Police Homicide Unit responded to the scene to lead the investigation. Because the incident involved a MCSO Deputy, the East County Major Crimes Team also responded to assist.
Sargeant Allen also reported that a preliminary investigation had revealed that another, different, area resident – an adult male – had fired shots as well. However, that man remained at the scene and was cooperating with the investigation, and no arrests had yet been made.
Witnesses – including both community members and law enforcement officers – are being interviewed by Detectives.
