With only one injury shooting this week, this article doesn’t qualify to be a “Shooting Report” such as we’ve had recently. But of course it is news.
At 1:40 a.m. on Monday, March 9, Portland Police Bureau (PPB) East Precinct officers were dispatched to a reported shooting at the intersection of NE 148th Avenue and East Burnside Street, in the Hazelwood neighborhood.

After the shooting victim had been rushed a hospital by ambulance with “with life-threatening injuries”, officers examine the truck he was in – riddled with bullet holes.
Within a minute of dispatch, first-arriving officers saw a Red Chevrolet ‘king cab’ pickup truck – with multiple bullet holes on the driver’s side – stopped facing eastbound in the intersection, and partly blocking the TriMet MAX light rail tracks.
Inside the truck was a man who appeared to have a gunshot wound; a Portland Fire & Rescue crew and ambulance paramedics responded quickly.

The 148th Avenue TriMet MAX Light Rail station is closed while detectives investigate a shooting.
“The injured man was taken to the hospital by ambulance with life-threatening injuries,” PPB Public Information Manager Mike Benner told reporters. “Due to the seriousness of the injuries, Portland Police Homicide Unit detectives responded to investigate.”

An investigator locates and documents spent bullet-shell casings.
Throughout the morning, East Burnside Street was closed between NE 146th Avenue and 151st Avenue, and NE 148th Avenue was closed from SE Stark Street to NE Couch Street. TriMet buses took passengers along alternate routes while the MAX line was closed by the investigation.
“As of right now, we’ve had 104 shootings in Portland in 2026 – which compares to about 131 at the same time last year,” Benner said. “So, we’ve seen a 21% decrease. As far as homicides go, we are sitting at one, compared to seven at this time last year.”
