A gun-brandishing teenager robbed the Burnside Market & Deli at 10128 E Burnside Street in outer East Portland’s Hazelwood neighborhood on Wednesday afternoon, September 30, 2026, at 3:34 p.m., prompting a dozen Portland Police Bureau (PPB) East Precinct officers to rush to the scene.

Suspect eludes neighborhood search
Arriving officers did not locate the armed robber, but found employees who were badly shaken up by the incident. Officers fanned out through the neighborhood – and along the nearby TriMet MAX Blue Line light rail tracks – searching for the culprit.

Detectives and officers search for the suspect in the neighborhood.

However, after hours of searching, the criminal slipped away, and so far no arrests have been made.

On October 21, 2026, the PPB Major Crimes Unit requested community assistance to identify the robbery suspect. Detectives described the suspect as an African American male in his teens.

At the time of the robbery, he was wearing a black jacket with grey sleeves featuring an “A” emblem on the chest, along with a dapper, distinctive black top hat.
