Although the weather has been bitter cold, shootings across outer East Portland heated up this week.
Although the Portland Police Bureau (PPB investigated many “Shots Fired” calls throughout our neighborhoods, these were the three primary shooting events this week:
January 19 at 1:35 a.m.
Squabble outside Centennial bar leads to injury shooting
Before officers arrived at the scene of a shooting at a Centennial bar, the victim had been driven in a private vehicle to a hospital’s Emergency Department.
Vague news stories circulated earlier this week about a shooting on January 19, an hour before “last call” on the street outside Kelli’s Café, located at 14717 SE Division Street.
To get the facts, East Portland News turned to PPB Public Information Officer Sergeant Kevin Allen. He told us that, at first, PPB East Precinct officers were dispatched at 1:35 a.m. to the area of SE 150th Avenue and Woodward Street for a “Shots Fired” complaint. They were soon redirected to Kelli’s Café on SE Division Street.

There was abundant “evidence of a shooting” there, but no victim. “The wounded person was transported to a hospital [Adventist Medical Center] via private vehicle with non-life-threatening injuries,” Sergeant Allen informed. “Officers determined that the person was shot after getting into a confrontation with a second person; the suspect(s) fled the scene and have not been located.”

Members of the PPB’s Enhanced Community Safety Team (ECST) found and documented numerous spent bullet shell casings left behind in the westbound lanes of SE Division Street.
“This remains an open and active investigation,” affirmed Sergeant Allen. “Detectives appreciate hearing from anyone with information about this shooting; please e-mail details to crimetips@police.portlandoregon.gov and refer to Case No. PP25-16173.”

Brentwood-Darlington shooting injures two dogs
After shots ring out in Brentwood Park, beside Lane Middle School, Portland Police are called out to investigate.
Brentwood Park – it abuts Lane Middle School on two sides – is a popular “dog park”, enjoyed by many Brentwood-Darlington neighbors. Even though Sunday night, January 19, was chilly, many people and furry companions were walking in and around the park.
Shots erupted, reportedly from inside a vehicle. PPB East Precinct officers were dispatched to the park at 10:47 p.m., along S. E. 60th Avenue near Ogden Street, near the park’s Off Leash Dog Area.

Arriving officers found distressed neighbors and dog owners directing them to two dogs hurt in the shooting. Apparently one of the dogs had been shot; the other was wounded by shrapnel – both were taken to an animal hospital. and are expected to recover from their injuries.
The owner of the dogs wasn’t hurt in the incident.
The PPB’s older Mobile Command Unit serves has headquarters for the investigation into this shooting.
After the PPB’s Mobile Command Unit set up in the street, more officers arrived and began combing the street and park, looking for evidence. One significant find made by officers was of bullet holes in a vehicle.
Neighbors later told reporters they heard “numerous” gunshots; some recalled hearing as many as ten.
