Week #110 Shooting Report | It’s unclear why, but there’s been a respite from the high number of shootings in our neighborhoods this week …

Officers were still called to investigate “Shots Fired” calls this week in many of our neighborhoods; however, unlike last week, there were no homicides by gunshot.

It looks as if our neighborhoods got at least one “week off” from the excessively high number of shooting murders and woundings – as well as a reduction in “Shots Fired” calls.

August 21
Downtown shooting victim treated in Hazelwood

At this hospital’s Emergency Department in the Hazelwood neighborhood, a person is treated for a gunshot wound.

The evening of August 21, Portland Police Bureau (PPB) officers were alerted at 7:43 p.m. that a gunshot victim had entered the Adventist Medical Center Emergency Department.

Typically such “hospital-walk-in wounded” have little to say to officers; this case was different.

“In this incident, the victim said he was somewhere in downtown Portland when he heard a gunshot then felt pain in his leg,” reported PPB Public Information Officer Nathan Sheppard. “Someone dropped him off at the hospital; the gunshot wound was non-life- threatening.

“The victim did not see the suspect, and no one is in custody for this,” Lt. Sheppard told East Portland News.

This is Case No. 22-225548.

August 19
No shooting, but an arrest in Lents

Officers are dispatched on a “Shooting-with Weapon” call, but don’t find any victim.

At 9:33 a.m. on August 19, PPB East Precinct officers were dispatched to a “Shooting-with Weapon” in the area of SE 82nd Avenue of Roses at Malden Street.

Several PPB units, including Focused Intervention Team (FIT) officers arrived, but didn’t find either a suspect or a victim, and dismissed the ambulance that had been sent.

Officers take a person into custody – but not for a shooting.

However, witnesses did point officers north; some were behind the Checkered Flag Tavern at SE 82nd Avenue of Roses at Flavel Street. But still, no suspect or victim was located. Further information sent several officers even further north – to the parking lot of the Plaid Pantry store at SE 82nd just north of Duke Street.

“In this incident, there was no shooting, as far as officers could determine,” Lt. Sheppard conceded. “However, an individual was causing a disturbance, and was taken to jail for an outstanding warrant.”

This is Case No. 22-223273.

‘Shots Fired’ at two of last week’s locations

Combing through Portland Bureau of Emergency services for “Shots Fired” calls, these two incidents came up, at two familiar locations:

* 22-226676       08/22/2022 at 23:24:03           3100 Block of NE ROCKY BUTTE LN

This was the location where a child and young teenage youth were shot and wounded during the early morning hours of August 18 on Rocky Butte. Note that this incident took place not long before midnight.

** 22-228165       08/24/2022 at 13:04:11           00 Block of SE 127TH AVE

Although officers didn’t find a victim this week, this was the exact location of a shooting homicide in Hazelwood, last week, on the evening of August 17.

~ SHOTS FIRED LOG ~

At 23 “Shots Fired” calls recorded this week, our area logged about half the number of from last week. Officers often don’t find evidence of shooting at such calls.

We asked the PPB’s Lt. Sheppard if our perception that there were fewer shooting incidents was correct. He replied, “There has been a slight downturn in the number of shootings; it’s too early to ascribe this to any particular reason.”
