Long after other outer East Portland famers markets close for the season, again this year the Montavilla Farmers Market (MFM) is continuing its tradition of hosting a “Winter Market” at their lot along SE Stark Street.

Why do they stay open during the winter?

Alexandria “Allie” Guevarra of Allie G’s Pastries PDX spends a moment with MFM Market Manager Lisa Hall.

“We’re open twice a month during the winter and spring months, due to the demonstrated demand of both our neighbors who shop here, and the vendors who have winter crops and prepared foods to sell,” explained MFM Manager Lisa Hall.

“When people come, they tell us they’re glad it’s set up like our regular markets, and they can shop among the farm stands and food producers they’ve come to know over the years,” Hall told East Portland News.

This prudently masked neighbor pauses while making a purchase from a cheerful staffer with Fiddlehead Farm located in Corbett.

Bringing in veggies from their one-acre urban farm in the Parkrose neighborhood is Blynda Barnett, of Red Truck Homestead.

Shoppers can expect to see about 40 vendors at these markets, Hall remarked. Specifically, wintertime consumers can find a good selection of fresh produce – such as root vegetables, hearty greens, and squashes; as well as animal products from ranchers.

“The market’s offerings are complemented with artisan food products, baked goods – and, of course, a good selection of hot food from vendors,” pointed out Hall.

“Regardless of the weather – wind, rain, and yes, even sometimes snow – our market takes place because, here in our community, shoppers are renowned for patronizing the market to shop with, and thus support, our vendors,” pointed out Hall.
