After it relative peace in outer East Portland last week, shooting violence again picked up this week in our neighborhoods.
In addition to this week’s stories, there were 35 “Shots Fired” calls and 9 more “Shooting” calls to which Portland Police Bureau (PPB) officers were dispatched.

Man killed in Sumner neighborhood shooting
Here’s officer is looking for evidence along “camper row” on NE 92nd Avenue, at the far east edge of the Sumner neighborhood.
On Sunday, September 1, at 3:31 a.m., PPB North Precinct officers were sent to a “Shooting-with-Weapon” incident at NE 92nd Avenue and Webster Street. In this area, beside NE 92nd Avenue is a dirt path that parallels the I-205 Freeway; it’s a favorite spot for transient campers.
Arriving officers found an injured man along the dusty path. He was rushed to a hospital for treatment, but later died.
The suspect or suspects left the scene before police arrived.
Near one of the reportedly-involved campers, an officer hunts for additional evidence.
As the PPB’s Homicide Unit detectives arrived to investigate, officers closed off access to Webster and Alberta Streets which both dead-end into NE 92nd Avenue.

September 3
Man with gunshot wound arrives at hospital
In the noon hour, staff at this local Emergency Department brings in a person with a gunshot wound.
An unusual mid-day occurrence took place on September 3 – one that usually happen at night: A gunshot-wounded victim walked in to the Emergency Department (ED) at Adventist Medical Center Portland. When a person enters a hospital’s ED with a traumatic gunshot or knife injury, hospital staff members are required, by law, to immediately report it to police.
“This person walked in at 12:19 p.m. with a gunshot wound,” confirmed PPB Public Information Officer Terri Wallo Strauss to East Portland News. “The adult male told officers at the hospital that he was walking near the area of SE 148th Avenue and Division Street [when the shooting took place]. He could not, or would not, provide more information; and, some details about location kept changing [in his story].
“Officers could not find any evidence of a shooting near that location,” Wallo Strauss added. “There are some indications it could possibly be self-inflicted.”

Struggle leads to shooting, in Hazelwood
Down this dark street, officers pull in and begin looking into a shooting.
In the early hours of Wednesday, September 4, a dispute escalated into a brawl – before shots rang out along SE 127th Avenue, just north of Stark Street.
PPB East Precinct officers were sent to investigate along this unpaved part of SE 127th Avenue, near the water tower.
“When officers arrived, they determined there was a struggle between two people known to each other – and, that one person had been shot,” confirmed Public Information Officer Sergeant Kevin Allen. “The suspect fled; and, the victim was transported to a local hospital, with life-threatening injuries.”
Near SE Stark Street, members of the PPB’s Enhanced Community Safety Team begin staging, as an investigation begins.
PPB’s Enhanced Community Safety Team responded to the scene to investigate – and this investigation is ongoing.
Anyone who has not already spoken with PPB investigators about this shooting, but who has knowledge concerning it, is asked to send tips or information by email to crimetips@police.portlandoregon.gov – making reference to Case No. 24-224945.

Hospital receives another ‘walk in’ shooting victim
Another shooting victim arrives at the Adventist Medical Center’s Emergency Department for treatment.
Again, because hospitals are required to immediately contact the PPB when a person with a gunshot wound is brought in by private transportation to their Emergency Department, officers were dispatched on September 4 at 11:01 p.m. to Adventist Medical Center.
“An individual with a non-life-threatening gunshot wound was dropped off at the hospital for treatment,” PPB Public Information Manager Mike Benner told East Portland News. “The individual did not provide officers information about the shooting. That’s all we have to share.”
So if you have information about this particular shooting, send it by email crimetips@police.portlandoregon.gov – and refer to Case No.24-225817.
