In so many of the gun violence incidents surging in outer East Portland, the motive behind the shots fired is unclear or unknown.

But armed robbery was clearly the motive of two men who burst into the Candlelight Restaurant and Lounge, in the 7300 block of NE Glisan Street on Tuesday evening, August 25.

Officers begin to secure the scene of the robbery and shooting.

Portland Police Bureau (PPB) East Precinct officers were dispatched to the scene, as also were medical emergency responders, at 9:25 p.m. that evening to investigate the armed robbery.

“Upon arrival officers learned that two male suspects entered the restaurant and demanded money at gunpoint; a victim tried to intervene, and was shot,” explained PPB Public Information Officer Melissa Newhard. “The victim was taken to an area hospital by ambulance; the victim’s medical status is unknown at this time.”

Officers secured the scene, and PPB Robbery Division detectives were called in to investigate the crime.

A customer of the restaurant, now suffering at least one gunshot injury, is rushed to a hospital after trying to stop the robbery.

Remaining undisclosed are the descriptions of the two armed bandits, and whether they stole any money or valuables before the shooting took place.

“The suspects fled prior to police arrival, and have not been located,” Newhard reported. “If anyone has information about the robbery and shooting and has not been contacted by investigators, they are asked to call robbery detectives at (503) 823-0405.”
