A unique five-hour pop-up held in The Oregon Clinic south parking lot along NE 99th Avenue – just west, across the street from the shuttered Gateway Fred Meyer Supercenter – was called the Gateway Night Market, on Saturday, February 7, in the afternoon and on into the evening.
Take in the essence of attending the Gateway Night Market in our video:
Good thing the organizers chose to hold this one-off event under the covering of a huge tent – it poured rain the entire time.
But the inclement weather didn’t dampen the spirits of those who came to this gathering.

All smiles at the Night Market is its organizer, Prosper Portland’s Events and Film Office Senior Project Manager, Amanda Park.
“Welcome to the ‘Gateway Night Market’,” smiled Amanda Park, Senior Project Manager at the Events and Film Office of Prosper Portland. “Holding an event like this came up as an idea while I was working with the Portland City Council and the Mayor.”

Gazing at this photo, you can almost smell the savory scent of sausages, beef, and chicken being grilled by chef Johnny Vongbouthdy of Juicy JV’s Wings.
“We understood that there was a really big need to bring some vibrancy into the Gateway District,” explained Park to East Portland News. “We thought, to kick off the effort, we’d hold a ‘night market’ here – and then, we’ll see what’s next.”
The dreary climatic conditions notwithstanding, the Night Market lived up to the promoter’s promise of, “Lighting up the Gateway District with an evening of food, culture, and community!”

Performers from Winnie Chinese Dance show their skills at the Night Market.

Guests visited the fifteen vendors gathered under the big tent, and purchased freshly-cooked foods from mobile kitchens.
“For this Night Market we partnered with IRCO and the White Lotus Foundation, who are great event producers,” acknowledged Park.

Preparing to perform are members of Portland Lee’s Association Lion Dance Team.
“The best thing that can come out of this is that we hope to give Gateway area residents something exciting to attend and something exciting to do – as we look forward to being out here more!” Park said.
