A man operating an electric motorcycle died after colliding with a Jeep Wrangler on NE Halsey Street near 111th Avenue in the Hazelwood neighborhood on Tuesday evening, May 26, 2026, according to Portland Police Bureau officials.
Dispatch records listed the incident as a “Motor Vehicle Accident with Injury,” logged as Incident No. 26-152558, at 6:34 p.m. Portland Police Bureau (PPB) East Precinct officers responded to reports of a crash involving an electric bicycle and a vehicle, as did an ambulance and Portland Fire & Rescue paramedics.
Medical crews transported the rider to an area hospital, where the bicyclist later died, police reported. The driver of the Jeep remained at the scene and cooperated with officers.

Officers look inside the back of a partially open ambulance to check on the severely injured cycle rider.
The PPB Major Crash Team responded to investigate. During the on-scene investigation, one-way eastbound Halsey Street was closed between NE 111th and 113th Avenues.
Two days later, on May 28, PPB officials identified the dead rider as 40-year-old Jered W. Nelson of Portland. Investigators further clarified that Nelson had been operating an electric motorcycle, not an electric bicycle, as initially reported.

According to the PPB’s preliminary investigation, the driver of a Jeep Wrangler had been traveling eastbound on NE Halsey Street and turned into a parking lot. Nelson, operating the electric motorcycle, ran into the passenger side of the Jeep. Investigators reported that Nelson was not wearing a helmet. He was pronounced dead at the hospital.
The crash is still under investigation, and detectives continue to examine whether impairment contributed to the incident. At the time of the Bureau’s latest public update, there was no indication the Jeep driver was impaired.
