Drunk teen driver crashes BMW into TriMet bus yard off I‑205 in outer East Portland

Discover why first responders said this late-night rollover crash could “very easily” have been a fatality …

As dawn breaks, investigators document the BMW’s tire tracks leading off the I‑205 ramp and through the fence into a TriMet lot.

A late-night rollover crash off the northbound Interstate 205 ramp to SE Powell Boulevard, at 1:51 a.m. on Saturday, June 20, destroyed a light pole and a fence before the responsible BMW came to rest upside down against a parked TriMet bus inside the secured lot, police reported.

Portland Police Bureau (PPB) East Precinct officers responded – and when officers arrived, they found a 1996 BMW 528‑series sedan on its roof inside a fenced TriMet property – a large outer East Portland bus yard – on SE Powell Boulevard at 97th Avenue.

In the early light of day, the wrecked chain-link fence shows the ribbon-like path that the BMW tore into the TriMet enclosure.

Two occupants trapped in overturned BMW
According to PPB, Portland Fire & Rescue crews and ambulance paramedics responded and assessed the two occupants: A 19‑year‑old male driver and a 15‑year‑old female passenger.

The car was upside down and required specialized tools to safely extricate both people from the wreckage. At multiple points, paramedics believed the injuries could possibly be life‑threatening.

Police reported that “incredible lifesaving efforts” by Portland Fire & Rescue and ambulance paramedics led to both patients being freed alive from the overturned vehicle and transported to a hospital. Continued medical care at the hospital stabilized both, and they are now expected to survive their injuries.

Using heavy rescue equipment, Portland Fire & Rescue Mill Park Station 7’s Ladder Truck Company and paramedics rescue two occupants from the overturned BMW.

High-speed exit, light pole and fence destroyed
Investigators from the PPB’s Major Crash Team concluded that the BMW driver had been northbound on I‑205 at a high rate of speed before taking the Powell Boulevard exit.

The vehicle left the roadway, destroyed a light pole, struck a tree, then crashed through the fence surrounding the TriMet property and rolled over next to a parked and unoccupied TriMet bus. The bus appeared undamaged.

The force of the crash appeared to partially eject the driver, and officers observed that because of that, the collision very easily could have been fatal. At this stage of the investigation, there was no indication that any other vehicles were involved.

Evidence at the scene indicated “impaired driving” as the main factor in the crash, according to a Portland Police crash investigator.

After rescuing the trapped occupants of the BMW, firefighter/paramedics begin to stow their powerful Holmatro rescue tools back onto the rig.

Driver criminally cited for DUII
The driver of the sedan, 19‑year‑old Kyrylo Novikov of Vancouver, Washington, was criminally cited for Driving Under the Influence of Intoxicants (DUII), Reckless Driving, and Recklessly Endangering Another Person, PPB reported.

The Bureau expressed appreciation for the partnership of Portland Fire & Rescue, AMR, the Oregon Department of Transportation, and TriMet in responding to and managing the scene.
