This incident started with an armed carjacking, just before sunrise on Wednesday morning, June 25, about two blocks southeast of Gateway Discover Park – near the intersection of NE Hassalo Street and 108th Avenue.

Portland Police Bureau (PPB) officers were sent on what was dispatched as a “Robbery-with- Weapon” call at 4:05 a.m. – but Bureau officials have revealed only that it was “reports of an armed carjacking” being involved that triggered the massive callout of officers to the area, and that those officers were searching for “two carjacking suspects”.

An officer takes cover while on the lookout for two armed carjacking suspects.

PPB SERT officers go yard-by-yard, seeking the carjackers.

The reportedly-armed thugs didn’t take their stolen vehicle far – officers spotted it parked about a half-mile distant from where it was stolen – on NE 114th Avenue, between Multnomah and Halsey Streets – where the suspects had been seen fleeing into the neighborhood.

It didn’t take long for 26 officers to swarm the area, including members of the PPB’s Special Emergency Reaction Team (SERT). Residents in the area were told to “shelter in place”, and to call 9-1-1 to report any suspicious activity.

After searching area streets and yards, SERT officers stand down.

At 10:15 a.m., the SERT ended its search for the two carjacking suspects. “The suspects were not located, and are believed to have fled the area,” a PPB spokesperson told reporters. However, the hunt for them goes on – and the PPB Major Crimes Unit continues to investigate this case.
