Members and guests of the Lents Neighborhood Livability Association gathered for their monthly meeting on May 8 at the Community Connections Center on Mt. Scott.

After enjoying pizza and other treats, the 21 people attending sat back to learn about trees from Jim Gersbach from Trees for Life Oregon.

After announcements, the audience focuses on the evening’s presentation.

The speaker started out telling about their mission: ensuring that large-form (when mature, reaching 50 feet or so) and long-lived (75 years) trees in every part of the city – and especially here in outer East Portland – reach their full maturity, enabling them to provide the greatest benefits to neighbors.

“We do this by inspiring action to protect these trees, and secure the space to plant new large-form trees in new development and street improvements,” explained Gersbach.

The organization’s focus on the Lents and other neighborhoods can help increase and preserve large trees, says Jim Gersbach, Senior Planting Crew Leader with Trees for Life Oregon.

During the meeting, Gersbach answered a wide variety of questions – ranging from who is responsible for “street trees” planted on “tree lawns”, to general care, to regulations about removing and replacing trees.
