In on the second floor of the Foothills Apartments, at 4040 SE 174th Avenue, shots rang out in the early morning hours of Friday, August 30, leaving a woman dead, a man critically wounded, and an unhurt child alone in the apartment.

Portland Police Bureau (PPB) East Precinct officers were dispatched to the scene at 3:33 a.m., that morning, to investigate reports of a shooting.

At the scene, the road remains closed; the PPB Mobile Command Center serves as offices for the investigators who are investigating the homicide.

Witnesses said several ambulances had been to the most southwesterly unit of the apartment complex. “I didn’t hear any shots, but all of the sirens and lights woke us up in the middle of the night,” resident Gustavo Gerardo told East Portland News later that morning.

“Officers found an adult female with a gunshot wound; the female was pronounced dead at the scene,” an unidentified PPB official informed the news media. “Officers also located a second victim – an adult male – suffering from multiple gunshot wounds; he was transported to an area hospital for treatment of life threatening injuries.”

On the balcony of the apartment, PPB Homicide Detail detectives ponder the evidence being gathered.

More than 14 law enforcement personnel responded to the location, including the Portland Police Bureau’s Homicide Detail detectives who were called in to assist with the investigation.

More investigators duck under the red crime scene tape, heading toward the unit where the shooting took place.

Officers were reportedly surprised to come upon a young child in the apartment unit who apparently was present at time of the shooting; the child is safe with officers, and was not harmed, officials said.

“Officers searched the area for the suspect(s); at this time, no arrests have been made in connection to this shooting,” was the final information provided about the incident at this time.

SE 174th Avenue remained closed into the afternoon as the investigation continued.
