We wistfully imagine that, perhaps, at some indefinite time in the future, we’ll all experience a week without any shootings, with nobody wounded by gunfire in outer East Portland.

But, it wasn’t this week. Two shootings marred the evening of May 5, about four hours apart, in geographically-distant neighborhoods, each ending with one victim each having a gunshot wound.

Drive-by shooting wounds one in Centennial

An officer wraps up his part of the investigation into this shooting, on the edge of outer East Portland.

At 12:52 a.m. on the fifth of May, Portland Police Bureau (PPB) East Precinct officers were dispatched to investigate the sound of gunshots in the Centennial neighborhood, near SE 162nd Avenue and Taylor Street. It was another “Shooting – with Weapon” call.

While there weren’t any suspects of victims found then in that area, officers did discover a number of shell casings along SE 162nd Avenue.

Investigators didn’t find a suspect, but they did find “evidence of a shooting”.

And then officers did come across an apparent shooting victim several blocks away, for whom they attempted to obtain medical attention. “However, the victim eventually went to the hospital by private vehicle,” reported a PPB official. “It appears the victim was riding in a car, and was hit by gunfire from a different car – one which fled prior to police arrival.”

If you have information about the case, please contact the PPB, and reference Case No. 21-120348.

Person wounded on NE 82nd Avenue of Roses

Crime scene tape marks off the scene of yet another shooting on the streets of outer East Portland.

Also on May 5, at 5:28 a.m., it was PPB North Precinct officers who were dispatched on a “Shooting – with Weapon” call to the Cully neighborhood – specifically, to NE 82nd Avenue of Roses at Humboldt Street.

Arriving officers found a person who appeared to have been shot, and secured the area so medical personnel could safely assist the victim, and rush them to a hospital by ambulance.

This shooting victim is being prepared to be taken to the hospital, by ambulance.

“Officers conducted an area check for any suspect, and for evidence; but it appears the suspect had fled prior to police arrival,” a PPB official told us.
If you have information about this case, contact the PPB, and refer to Case No. 21-120438
