Another week, and unfortunately, two more deadly shootings in outer East Portland. Here are the facts about these gunshot homicides.

May 9
Deadly shooting along TriMet MAX line

Just after sunset on Tuesday, May 9, Portland Police Bureau (PPB) East Precinct officers were dispatched to a “Shooting-with Weapon” at 8:10 p.m. It was on East Burnside Street, just east of SE 122nd Avenue.

“When officers arrived, they found a man who was deceased,” is all a PPB official would reveal later that evening.

Officers speak with a PPB Homicide Unit detective near the crime scene.

As the investigation got underway, East Burnside Street was closed between 122nd Avenue and 126th Avenue; and the TriMet MAX lines in that area were shut down in both directions.

Soon, 17 officers, crime scene investigators, and detectives were at the scene.

Watch, as this shooting homicide investigation unfolds:

The true crime scene was difficult to pinpoint. Officers, and soon PPB Homicide Unit detectives were looking for evidence in a relatively narrow area of eastbound East Burnside Street, between the MAX shelter and the southern sidewalk.

It didn’t take long for the PPB’s Mobile Command Unit to pull into the Menlo Park TriMet MAX parking lot, and back up next to the Menlo Park Safe Rest Village located there.

The PPB’s Mobile Command Unit pulls in and serves as headquarters for homicide detectives.

Several people who said they lived in the “American Rescue Plan Act” funded alternative shelter operated by Cultivate Initiatives, told East Portland News they heard at least one gunshot, perhaps more.

May 12
Man dies in another Hazelwood shooting

Officers cordon off the area located just 0.7 miles north of the May 9th shooting, along NE 122nd Avenue, as a gunshot homicide investigation begins.

The evening of May 12, just before midnight, less than a mile north of the May 9 shooting’s location, this time, along NE 122nd Avenue and Wasco Street, was another fatal shooting in the Hazelwood neighborhood.

11:46 p.m., a PPB East Precinct Sergeant on patrol was flagged down and was directed to an injured man just to the east of the intersection adjacent to the Parkrose Adventist Health Urgent Care building. “The sergeant requested emergency medical services, but the man was pronounced deceased at the scene,” a PPB official said.

Again, the PPB’s Homicide Unit detectives were called out to the scene and investigated the case.

Officers share notes about evidence found at the scene with homicide detectives.

“The initial investigation suggests the man was shot,” the police spokesperson said. “No suspects were immediately located and no arrests have been made.
