This accident looks worse than it was. Find out why police say this grinding smash-up simply didn’t have to happen …

Mill Park neighbors came out when they heard the sound of this grinding crash – which left one vehicle on its side.

While some neighbors speculated that it might have been the rainy night that caused the accident on SE 122nd Avenue at SE Lincoln Street – others said it was simply the result of a driver making a poor decision.

The result of that two-vehicle collision – at about 10:00 p.m. on April 14 – was clear: A gray Acura’s front end was badly smashed; and a Jeep lay, driver’s door down, on its side.

An ambulance stands by, while paramedics check the condition of the accident victims.

Even though it took some time for the reports to become available, Portland Police Bureau Public Information Officer Sgt. Peter Simpson was finally able to sort out for us what happened.

“The Acura was traveling southbound on SE 122nd when a white Jeep drove across SE 122nd from a market, onto Lincoln Street,” Simpson reported. “The Acura hit the Jeep and rolled it.”

Both drivers were treated and released at scene by medical personnel, Simpson added. “The driver of the Jeep, 56-year-old Larry Jay Charlton of Southeast Portland was arrested for DUII (Alcohol) and Reckless Driving.”

Looking at these vehicles, it looks as if they may never be driven again.
