Members and guests at the April Gateway Area Business Association meeting got a surprise visit from the Tin Man and Dorothy, when two cast members from the Parkrose High School Theater’s upcoming production of The Wizard of Oz came to visit.

“Our show opens May 12,” said the school’s drama instructor and the show’s director, Ms. Zena.

“More than 100 kids – from Parkrose District elementary and middle schools – will join our cast in this, the most ambitious project to date,” Zena added. “If you enjoyed the move, you and your families will certainly like our live production of this endearing children’s story.”

GABA president Lee Powell, of Farmer’s Insurance Agency, tells about upcoming events, including the return of the Fun-O-Rama.

GABA hosts David Douglas Schools board candidates May 11
At their May meeting, GABA will feature a David Douglas School Board Candidates Forum. If you live in the district, here’s the opportunity to meet at least four of the candidates who have confirmed they’ll be there.

Meetings are now being held at Izzy’s Pizza, 1307 NE 102nd Avenue (in the Gateway Fred Meyer Shopping Center).

A flag ceremony – like the event held during GABA’s 9-11 First Responders Reception last September – will kick off the 2011 Gateway Fun-O-Rama.

Fun-O-Rama returns to Gateway May 21
On May 21st, members of the Gateway Area Business Association (GABA) once again present the Gateway Fun-O-Rama from 1:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m.

The 2011 Fun-O-Rama opens with a Flag Ceremony led by the Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office and Portland Police Bureau. Portland City Commissioner Amanda Fritz and other City and County dignitaries will greet fairgoers.

Portland Bureau of Transportation, Performance Bicycle, One on One Fitness and Therapy and Portland Police Cadets will safety-check bikes and riders before they head out for a free “Tour of Gateway” bike ride. Legacy Health will offer and fit bicycle helmets for a $5 donation.

Expect the zany antics of the Gateway Keystone Kops – seen here hooping it up in the 2011 82nd Avenue of Roses Parade last week – to enliven the Community Fair

New this year: The “Gateway has Talent” show will feature musical, comedy and variety acts throughout the afternoon, presenting the finest in local entertainment in a talent show format. “This will be a ‘family friendly’ feature of this year’s Fun-O-Rama, with music, comedy, magic, juggling, other skills, and skits,” says GABA’s President Lee Powell. “There is no cost to enter and a couple of spots are still open.”

The Fun-O-Rama Community Fair at 111th Square (NE 111th Avenue at NE Halsey St.) will also feature:

  • Exciting interactive displays by Gateway merchants, neighborhood associations and non-profit organizations;
  • A classic car show with vintage and specialty vehicles of all kinds;
  • Police, Fire, Emergency and American Red Cross vehicles will be on display;
  • Art show featuring works by members of the Portland Fine Arts Guild;
  • The famous, fabulous Fun-O-Rama Raffle with great prizes; and
  • Food, prizes and games.

The Fun-O-Rama Community Fair at 111th Square (NE 111th Avenue at NE Halsey St.) is fun and free.
