An otherwise chilly, but pleasant, Tuesday morning turned hectic for Powellhurst-Gilbert neighbors on January 28th when, at 8:20 a.m., Portland Police Bureau (PPB) officers attempted to serve a search warrant at a rental house at 3321 SE 90th Place.

The search warrant was related to an ongoing “stolen property” investigation.

Officers succeeded in taking three individuals into custody. But then they learned that additional suspects had barricaded themselves inside the house and refused to come out, PPB supervisors summoned their Special Emergency Reaction Team (SERT) and Crisis Negotiation Team (CNT) to assist.

Residents along the street were asked to remain indoors during the incident; SE 90th Place was closed down at Powell Boulevard, north to Victor Lane, while their tactical teams loud-hailed the recalcitrant suspects to come out.

These announcements warned that they may be bitten by police dogs and have drones swarm the property. Officers also tried having their friends send them text messages. But when all these measures were clearly of no avail, PPB SERT officers blew tear gas into an upstairs attic vent.

The tear gas worked. Coughing and sputtering, two additional subjects emerged from the house and were taken into custody.

So, in total, five people were arrested in this “stolen property” investigation.

At this point the PPB hasn’t identified just whom they took into custody. We’ll update this story as more information becomes available.
