Before 3,000 cheering students and staff members, at an all-school assembly on March 8, David Douglas High School (DDHS) Principal John Bier announced that school’s Varsity Cheer Team this year is officially the best in the State of Oregon.

Members of the DDHS Cheer Team bounded out into the center of the gym, accepting the accolades of their peers.

Cheer Team Head Coach Amber Cowgill thanks team members, coaches, and staff.

“It’s great having a solid foundation that comes from having good squads,” Cheer Team Head Coach Amber Cowgill told the assembly.

“A big shout-out to our school’s administration and staff members, and the mentors who helped us,” Cowgill said. “Most of all, I want to thank all of these kids for their effort and dedication.”

Gathered for a team photo is the 2016 State of Oregon 6-A trophy-winning DDHS Varsity Cheer Team.

“In fact, they are State champions for the second year in a row,” Activities Director Eric Wadsworth told East Portland News, saying that they got the good news on February 13.

“As competitive as all the schools are, to win a 6-A trophy in the State of Oregon is a huge honor, and a testament to the hard work of our coaches and our Cheer Team members,” Wadsworth commended.
