If you missed it last weekend, David Douglas High School PTSA volunteers urge you to come by now, for fabulous bargains – and to help support a really good project. On March 19, it’ll be ‘Fill the Bag for $5’ day …
Some call the annual Spring Rummage Sale at David Douglas High School a “shoppers paradise” – just look at all this merchandise for sale! At the back of the photo, up on the stage, are thousands of books for sale, too.

Volunteers have been hard at work preparing for – then putting on – the annual Spring Rummage Sale at David Douglas High School (DDHS).

“Yes, it’s a lot of work, but this helps fund our Senior All-night Drug- and Alcohol-free All-night Party,” reminded the committee chair, Kari Deardorff, during the first weekend of the Rummage Sale in the school’s South Cafeteria on March 12.
At the Spring Rummage Sale, committee Chair Kari Deardorff and volunteer Mary Brown pause from ringing up eager shoppers.
From antiques to knick-knacks, to purses to clothes, Holiday items, linens, children’s toys – and two hallways of furniture – there’s a lot of merchandise still on display, as shoppers take their time going from table to table. And, if you like to read, they’ve got thousands of books available – for bargain prices.
“We’re still getting in fresh items,” Deardorff said. “It’s coming in by the truckload –that means if shoppers come back on March 18 and 19, they’ll find lots more merchandise that wasn’t here on our first weekend.”
Don Wells, a resident of the Hazelwood Neighborhood says this disused teddy bear will soon be attracting fish – he thinks its fur will make great fishing lures.
She pointed out that their final day, March 19 is “Fill the Bag Day”. “You can take home everything you can fit in a shopping bag for just $5 a bag,” Deardorff pointed out.
Depending on how much merchandise remains, she said the committee is considering taking space at “Portland’s Largest Garage Sale” scheduled for April.
Don’t shop hungry! DDHS seniors Taylor Dizon and Candy Roberts, in the National Honor Society, help keep up shoppers’ blood sugar up by vending toothsome baked goods.
On March 19, their final day, volunteers will be on duty from 8 am to 4 pm.
It’s in the DDHS “South Cafeteria”, just south of the Horner Performing Arts Center on SE 130th Avenue. For more information, contact Kari Deardorff at ddhsptsa@gmail.com
