Threatening rain clouds rolled in over the Powellhurst-Gilbert neighborhood on Saturday evening, August 5; but only a brief spritz was detected as the Portland Parks & Recreation Summer Free For All “Concert in the Park” got underway in Gilbert Heights Park.
That evening, the concert featured Donna Jones and the Delegation, with “Sultry and soulful Rhythm & Blues”, as they describe it.
Powellhurst-Gilbert Neighborhood Association Co-Chair José Gamero and Board Member Deborah Marion welcome neighbors to the free concert.
“We’ve been looking forward to this concert all summer, here in our park,” Powellhurst-Gilbert Neighborhood Association Co-Chair José Gamero told East Portland News.
Community organizations’ representatives had tables set up along one side of the park providing information to guests. And, food trucks were on another side with food and beverages available for purchase.
Neighbors learn about community services from representatives of nonprofit organizations and City of Portland Bureaus.
“It’s important to have a public event like this to help neighbors get together in a relaxed atmosphere,” Gamero observed. “And, it’s good that we can offer families this free concert, because not everyone can afford to pay to go out to an event these days.
“It’s go great to have a concert right here, near the center of our neighborhood, where people can bring their kids and family in a way that helps build a sense of community,” declared Gamero.
On stage is Donna Jones and the Delegation.
The concert began, and Donna Jones and the Delegation performed standard jazz-club tunes which the audience enjoyed.
“It’s all about making connection with your neighbors,” Gamero said. “When there’s trouble or an emergency, knowing your neighbors is important.”
As the music plays, neighbors savor a pleasant summer evening in the park.
