A pedestrian was stuck and killed by a passing car on Southeast Stark Street near Southeast 148th Avenue about 11:15 p.m. on March 9.
A 9-1-1 caller reported that the suspect was driving westbound on Stark Street, in a dark-colored vehicle, was approaching 148th Avenue when he struck the victim, then turned left onto 148th Avenue, leaving the scene.
SE Stark Street is closed for hours, between SE 148th 151st Avenue, as the investigation begins.
Portland Police Bureau (PPB) East Precinct officers first arrived at the scene, followed shortly by medical first responders.
“Officers and medical personnel located a pedestrian, deceased at the scene, and evidence of a vehicle collision,” said PPB Public Information Officer Sgt. Pete Simpson.
Major Crash Team members set up their Total Station surveying unit to document the scene.
“The victim of this hit and run was identified as 37-year-old Corey Deshawn Simmons; his family was located out of state and notified,” Simpson said the following day.
Asked how Simmons came to be where he could be struck by a vehicle, Simpson told East Portland News that the incident investigators had not yet released details about the crash.
Sgt. Simpson then revealed “About five hours after the tragic incident, at 4:45 a.m. on March 10, the suspect involved in this fatal hit and run crash turned himself in to police.”
