Students and staff were understandably troubled when a man, brandishing a gun on December 4th at 12:49 p.m., was reported walking on NE Alameda Street, the narrow lane that separates the GlenhavenPark tennis courts on the north to MadisonHigh School

Portland Police Bureau (PPB) sent Youth Services Division officers to the location, and backup officers responded as well. As a precaution, the school went into a “lockout” as a dozen police units came into the area.

“Officers did not find anyone near the tennis courts, but did see a person matching the description waiting at a TriMet bus stop on 82nd Avenue near the school,” confirmed PPB Public Information Officer Sgt. Pete Simpson.

More police units arrive as officers spot the man they believe displayed a gun near the school.

As the officers walked up to the man, “he ran towards Glenhaven Park – but was quickly taken into custody without incident,” Simpson reported. “During a search of the subject, officers did locate a handgun in his possession,” he said, adding that the school then resumed normal operations.

“The suspect is 20-year-old Christopher Dwayne Washington, who is not a student at Madison High School. No information was learned to indicate Washington intended to enter the school,” concluded Simpson.

Washington, was booked into the Multnomah County Detention Center at 2:02 p.m. that afternoon on numerous gun-related charges, including three felony counts of Unlawful Use of Weapon, and one of Felon in Possession of a Firearm.

After his arraignment in Multnomah County District Court, Washington was assigned $25,000 combined bail, but he is currently being held at MCCD without bail, on a Felony Parole Violation charge
