Parkrose Farmer’s Market doubles chance for outdoor shopping

Too busy to visit their market on Saturday? Read this and find out when – and where – they’re opening for a second day every week …

While most farmers’ markets are just now getting ready to open, the Parkrose Farmer’s Market already has a full month of activity on the books.

One of the new vendors we met was Teresa Winegar, who is with T & R Baskets. “I’ve been in the nursery business for many years. My husband said we should do this as a hobby, so we got three greenhouses and got started. We love the Parkrose Market!”

Strawberry season due to begin
“We’ve been having a great time,” said their market master, Steve Voorhees. “People can see our new yellow 20-foot blimp for miles, and the colorful banners along NE Shaver Street guide people right into the parking lot, here at Parkrose High School.”

While it’s too early to expect fresh vegetables, the market offers cut flowers, nursery stock, and tomatoes ready to plant, prepared foods, and even a great fresh hummus dealer, and hot tamales.

“We’re hoping to see Oregon strawberries coming in the next week or so,” Voorhees said. “They’ve been delayed by the rain. But, when they come in, they’re going to be sweet and awesome, like they always are.”

Ain’t she sweet? Bethany Phillips, with Gabriel’s Bakery, entices shoppers with a wide array of delicious baked goods.

Now on Sunday, too
The big news, Voorhees enthused, is that many of their vendors are joining them at a Sunday Parkrose Farmer’s Market, starting June 6, and running throughout the season. “It’s at NE 130th Place and NE Sandy Boulevard, in the Friendly Village parking lot, right on the way to Costco.

“The Saturday market at Parkrose High School on NE Shaver Street, a block west of NE 122^nd Avenue, will continue to be the ‘come-and-hang’ market with music and fun activities,” Voorhees reassured. “Our Saturday market is open this season from 9:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m.”

The Sunday Parkrose Farmer’s market is “more of a shopping market,” he explained. “On Sunday, look for us between 9:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. Whichever day one chooses, come on out and hang with us. You’ll have a blast!”
