In our news stories, for years now, you’ve seen how the simple and kind act of donating deposit-return cans and bottles to this monthly collection has helped along Parkrose students, and their organizations.
Once again we checked in on January 7, as a group was fighting wind-driven rain at Parkrose Middle School, to hold the Parkrose Bronco Boosters Beverage Bottle & Can Drive.
Parkrose High’s AVID sponsor Kerryn Henderson was pleased to see all the vehicles coming up the driveway, each one laden with deposit-return cans and bottles.
“This month, student volunteers are with the Parkrose High School AVID [Advancement Via Individual Determination] college readiness program,” explained sponsor Kerryn Henderson.
“This program helps to get all our kids college-ready, by giving them the tools and knowledge they need to successfully achieve a college education,” Henderson told East Portland News.
These Parkrose High AVID students work diligently sorting collected cans.
Every month, students and parents with different, rotating Parkrose High scholastic, sports, or after-school organizations come to help out, on the first Saturday. And that participating group gets a portion of the proceeds from that month’s can drive.
“Fundraising here supports our programs in many ways,” Henderson explained. “One way is that it helps fund the field trips; another is that it may fund teambuilding activities and supplies.
Parkrose High AVID students, teachers and parents have bagged up quite a haul of cans for the cause.
February 4:
