Breaking news comes to our attention in different ways. Sometimes a reader lets us know, or we’re notified by an emergency responding agency. But sometimes, by being ever-vigilant and keeping our eyes open for breaking news, we come across a story.

On Saturday evening, August 31, at about 7:30 p.m., we came across dozens of Portland Police Bureau (PPB) cars, several Clackamas County Sheriff’s Office patrol units, and a couple of Oregon State Police (OSP) cruisers parked along SE 82nd Avenue of Roses.

We then turned into the Brentwood-Darlington neighborhood at the southeast edge of the City of Portland and began to come across the officers from all those cars – and that got our attention!

A Portland Police K-9 Team and other officers try to sniff out the fleeing suspect along the Springwater Corridor Trail.

These law enforcement officers were setting up a perimeter to contain and catch a suspect south of S.E. 82nd Avenue, along Harney Street, south to Luther Road. Specifically, officers were moving along the Springwater Corridor Trail, and in and around Johnson Creek.

As night falls in outer East Portland, even more law enforcement officers join in the search.

A PPB officer in the area told East Portland News that they hadn’t been dispatched through the 9-1-1 Center. Instead, they were providing “mutual aid” or “backup” to the Oregon State Police. Another officer said that an OSP Trooper had been injured.

Not long after the incident concluded, OSP Government and Media spokesperson Captain Kyle Kennedy provided details.

“OSP initiated a traffic stop on a suspect vehicle for multiple violations on SR-213 [S.E. 82nd Avenue] near SE Luther Road.

Into the evening, the search for the fleeing suspect continues.

“The suspect passenger had an outstanding warrant for her arrest out of Clark County [in Washington State],” Kennedy continued. “After being advised she was under arrest, the suspect passenger resisted and ran away. There was a use of force that ensued – Taser deployment – and an attempt to take her into custody.”

But the lady evidently was quite familiar with the area and managed to disappear.

“While pursuing the suspect on foot, a trooper was injured and an attempt to locate the suspect passenger was unsuccessful,” revealed Kennedy.

The unidentified “suspect passenger” is still at large, but there’s still a warrant for her arrest, and the investigation continues.
