With an eye to its upcoming 20th anniversary next year, Performance Works NorthWest (PNW) Artistic Director Linda Austin is offering two works in a one-woman show she calls “remembered, yet re-imagined” – In June, at her studio in the Foster Powell neighborhood.
Over the years, as “Linda Austin Dance”, she recalls, “I’ve engaged artists and audiences in the process of experimentation, creation, and dialogue around the presentation of contemporary performance.”
“H is for Hammer” may be part of Linda Austin’s dance, “Recipe: A Reading Test”.
In “Recipe: A Reading Test”, Austin said, she “spells out a 3-D rebus” while examining the “artist/audience relationship with objects” such as soup cans, Polaroid photos, and paint.
In this adventurous performance, Linda Austin performs her dance entitled “Raw Material”.
The second piece, entitled “Raw Material”, is a dance that “pulls apart the text of a typical porn short story and juxtaposes the words with everyday objects and arbitrarily-composed movement – in the process yielding rhythms of language and body in which the seemingly sordid spills over into the beautiful,” as Austin puts it, reassuring that while this piece has a lot of movement and dance in it, she is clothed during the performance.
“This show is for people who enjoy adventurous performance that involves combining dance with objects,” Austin told East Portland News. “Instead of pure dance, it’s dance movement, combined with the use of props and images.”
The show is a fundraiser for Performance Works NorthWest. The details:
