The lobby of the “Empirical Theater” at the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry (OMSI) was abuzz with excitement and activity like never before, on Tuesday afternoon, April 11.

The reason: Dozens of kids were milling around, anxiously waiting to meet YouTube science star and host of The Fab Lab series, Lindsey Murphy – known online as “Crazy Aunt Lindsey”.

“I’m ready to go,” says “Crazy Aunt Lindsey” before the video begins.

Inside the Empirical Theater, “Crazy Aunt Lindsey” revs up the audience.

After gobbling down bags of “Cosmic Popcorn” and “Constellation Cupcakes” in the lobby, the energized throng of children was ushered into the theater for the première showing of “The Fab Lab at OMSI, Episode 1: Slumber Party!”

Additional episodes have been made possible by a grant from the Marie Lamfrom Charitable Foundation, and include:

  • Episode 2: Pet Shop! Explores zoology and the animal kingdom.
  • Episode 3: Tea Party! Reminds kids that while science can seem removed from our daily lives, it’s in everything we do – as it explores everyday chemistry in the kitchen.
  • Episode 4: Juneteenth Celebration! Shows how the day also serves as a celebration of Black history, ancestry, and culture – introducing kids to DNA and ancestry.

Just before her video plays, “Crazy Aunt Lindsey” calls out, “Are you ready?

At the showing, we learned that all four episodes were at least partially recorded at OMSI, and each one features an OMSI educator.

“For over a decade, The Fab Lab has demonstrated how fun and fabulous it can be to approach science – and life’s biggest questions – with curiosity, and in community,” the Portland-based Murphy chirped. “I’m thrilled to have OMSI celebrate with us in such a major way. It’s huge!”

The audience watches as this episode of The Fab Lab plays on OMSI’s big screen.
