Because so many folks in outer East Portland began shopping at for fresh foods at outdoor bazaars several years ago, the Montavilla Farmers Market created monthly, two-hour “Winter Stock-Up Markets” at their site on SE Stark Street.
At their first Stock-Up of the season, held on December 21, Market Manager Amanda Cross said she was pleased at the turnout – of both the vendors and the shoppers.

“These are smaller markets, and a slightly different style of market,” Cross told East Portland News. “Some people call it a ‘truck-style market’, because the vendors bring their trucks on-site and sell off their tailgates, under canopies.”
Shoppers will find a different mix of vendors and foods available at these winter markets, Cross explained. “This is an opportunity for our shoppers to try out some new vendors and new farms.”

At the January 11 market, shoppers will find:
- Tomatoes preserved in the form of ketchup, salsa, and tomato sauce
- Local fruit, such as apples, pears, and Asian pears
- Grass-fed beef, and pasture-raised lamb and pork
- Cakes, hand pies, cookies, and homemade biscuits
- Goat cheese, smoked salmon, Dungeness crab, bagels, honey, Oaxacan tamales, espresso, and home-style Japanese food
“Neighbors tell us these winter markets are important to them, because they like to shop locally all year long, and support their community,” Cross said. “It’s great to get healthy and good-tasting food onto your table, especially during the dark winter months.”
Shoppers choose from among the 35 varieties of fruit brought in by Kiyokawa Family Orchards.
The Montavilla Winter “Stock Up” Market repeats on January 11 – and again on February 8, from 11:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. Montavilla Farmers Market is located in the 7600 Block of SE Stark Street, across from Mr. Plywood. See them online: CLICK HERE to open their website home page.
