Even though the Montavilla Farmers Market (MFM) has been maintaining their open-every-other-Sunday schedule throughout winter and spring, May 7 drew an eager crowd for the first market of their “regular” season.
It didn’t take long for shoppers to buy most of the fresh vegetables brought in to the market by local farmers. Within the first hour, several vendors were “sold out” for the day. Disappointing for shoppers, but of course good for the sellers, who didn’t have to pack merchandise back to their farm or kitchen.
“Welcome to our opening day of the main season,” greets MFM Operations Manager Alli Neri.
“We have about 60 vendors here today,” enumerated MFM Operations Manager Alli Neri.
“We have all kinds of vendors here – featuring produce, flowers, hot prepared food, honey, goat cheese, fish, meats – just about everything someone could want,” Neri told East Portland News.

In addition to the many returning vendors, Neri said that they were welcoming several new ones this season, including a new goat cheese seller. “In addition to the vegetables, we’ve people selling salsa, a couple of vegan bakeries, plus wine and cider and hot sauce.
“Now that our market is open every Sunday, people rely on it for their weekly grocery shopping now,” Neri said. “Coming to our farmers market also provides a sense of community, where people can come together.”
The Canby Farm and Kitchen stand sees good business during the market.
