When Milwaukie Police Department (MPD) officers spotted a late-model Honda Civic, with no license plates on it, at about 11:00 p.m. the evening of October 17, they had no idea how difficult this traffic stop would become.

“When police activated their emergency lights, the vehicle sped off at a high rate of speed,” said a MPD spokesperson.

The pursuit began near the near the intersection of SE King Road and Bell Avenue, where the driver sped north to Johnson Creek Boulevard, then east, past the I-205 Freeway, and north again on SE 92nd Avenue.

After racing east on SE Foster Road, the driver turned north again on 111th Avenue, zoomed passed the Beggars Tick Natural Area, then missed the four-way stop at Harold Street and ran right into a yard.

“The vehicle crashed into a detached garage near the intersection of SE 111th Avenue and Harold Street,” the spokesperson said.

Fortunately, no one was inside that detached garage when the runaway car plowed into the overhead door. MPD image

Dead set on getting away, both driver and passenger ran from the vehicle, but were quickly nabbed by Portland Police Bureau East Precinct officers who were notified of the pursuit.

After checking the Honda’s Vehicle Identification Number, Portland Police verified it had been listed as stolen in Portland.
