It wasn’t gigantic, but the Latinx Supplies & Food Distribution event held on Thursday afternoon, October 7, at the Division Midway Alliance (DMA) Neighborhood Prosperity Initiative district, was certainly meaningful to the recipients.
“Today, we celebrating ‘Latinx Heritage Month’,” DMA Operations and Communications Coordinator Mohammad Khalid, who is also the organization’s Iraqi Community Liaison.
Handing off another box of groceries during the event is DMA’s Mohammad Khalid.
“We are distributing food boxes and household supplies to those who are in need,” Khalid explained to East Portland News.
To fill the food boxes, DMA partnered with Portland Open Bible Church, he told us. “And also, the City of Portland provided sundry supplies like toilet paper, paper towels, laundry soap,” Khalid pointed out.
Helping participants is DMA Latinx Community Liaison Lorena Mora and, with the Portland Open Bible Church Pantry, Maria Mendoza.
This helps DMA meet its mission because, Khalid observed. “We are working with the community help them get past this difficult time right now. A lot of the community in the outer East Portland area are struggling and losing their jobs, even though we’ve been in the COVID-19 pandemic for over a year.”
Southeast Works Workforce Neighborhood Navigator Vanessa Quan provides job information, as part of the distribution.
“And even more, today we have representatives from Southeast Works letting Latinx community members know about employment opportunities; as well as helping them create resumes and help them write cover letters,” reported Khalid.
