A tranquil Friday evening was shattered just after 7:00 p.m. on May 31 by the sound of gunfire at a large Gateway District apartment complex along NE 101st Avenue north of Glisan Street

Minutes later, Portland Police Bureau (PPB) officers began arriving to investigate the potential shooting; within ten minutes of the dispatch, 15 police units had arrived at the massive Gateway Park Apartments complex.

After a tussle with a man said to have fired a gun, officers stand by outside the apartment complex rental office.

A PPB sergeant waved us off, saying that shots were fired, indicating the incident wasn’t serious. However, eight police units remained at the scene as of 9:40 p.m. that evening.

“Officers responded to a report of a shooting; and after arriving, officers arrived and took a suspect into custody,” said PPB Public Information Officer Carlos Ibarra, after researching the incident.

“There was evidence of gunfire at the scene; investigators do not believe anyone was injured,” Ibarra told East Portland News. “A firearm was recovered.”

Ibarra noted that 34-year-old-Willie Jamal Jones was the man arrested. He was booked into the Multnomah County Detention Center (MCDC) at 10:27 p.m. that evening on three Felony charges and five Misdemeanors.

At his arraignment, Jones learned that, while the Multnomah County District Court judge dismissed several charges, he’s still facing a Felony count of Felon in Possession of a Firearm – as well as Misdemeanor charges of Attempted Assault of a Police Officer, Resisting Arrest, and Discharging a Firearm in the City.

Jones remains in custody at MCDC, in lieu of $15,000 combined bail.
