After multiple gunshots were fired, Portland Police Bureau (PPB) East Precinct district patrol cars started rolling into the Morgan Place Apartments, on East Burnside Street at SE 159th Avenue, one minute after being dispatched at 7:09 p.m. on May 3.
According to witnesses, a group of suspects approached the victim, briefly spoke to him, then one of the suspects shot him.

Officers begin their investigation of this “gang-related” shooting.
“Based on witness information, officers believe the suspects are gang-affiliated,” remarked PPB Public Information Officer Sgt. Pete Simpson. “They began looking for two or three African American males.”
At the same time, other officers were dispatched to intercept a private car, reportedly taking the gunshot victim to the hospital. “The officers contacted the victim,” Simpson said. “Medical personnel responded to transport the 25-year-old male to a Portland hospital for treatment.”
Police and Gang Enforcement Team members converge on the crime scene.
Police stop this car on SE Stark Street – one potentially related to the case.
Based on police radio calls, it appeared that other officers had stopped a car traveling westbound on SE Stark Street, near SE 145th Avenue, in connection with the case. The result of that stop remains unknown.
“The victim’s injuries are serious, but based on initial information, do not appear to be life-threatening,” Simpson said.
Anyone with information about gang and/or gun crimes in the City of Portland is encouraged to provide information to the Portland Police Bureau’s Tactical Operations Division at (503) 823-4106.
