Years ago, members of the Gateway Area Business Association (GABA) hosted annual cruise-ins at various locations.

The event was revived on September 1, was hosted primarily in the parking lot of Advantage Funeral & Cremation Services – Gateway.

“We’re calling our first annual ‘Gateway Cruising’, with proceeds from it going to the CherryBlossom Meals on Wheels Center,” exclaimed GABA Board Member Omar Obeid of Furniture Plus.

GABA Board Member Omar Obeid spends a moment with his dad, Mitch Obeid Sr., and his cool, 1980 Chevy Scottsdale pickup truck.

A total of 20 antique, customized, restored, and specialty vehicles registered to participate in the car show. Owners spent a pleasant summer afternoon talking about their vehicles with the guests who strolled through.

“GABA Board Members were trying to find ideas to get people in the area more involved with our business community,” Obeid explained to East Portland News. “So, when the Gateway Discovery Park opened, it seemed like a good idea to hold our cruise-in here, directly across from the park’s entrance!”

Master magician Mark Benthimer, from the All American Magic Theater at Mall 205, performs for enthusiastic audiences at the cruise-in.

In addition to raising funds for a good cause, “we’re seeing that this event is drawing positive attention to our neighborhood business district, and increasing foot traffic, while we help continue to build a sense of community,” Obeid said. “And, personally, I really like seeing all these beautiful cars and trucks that came out today!

“We’re especially thankful for our great business hosts, Advantage Cremation and Funeral Services – Gateway, and The Outer Rim Bicycle Shop, for participating in our event,” Obeid concluded.
