Felon fingered after bar tussle

Here’s how police took another stolen handgun, and the felon toting it, off the streets …

Known for good food and its four pool tables, the revelry at the Shamrock Bar & Grill came to a stop, when a felon flashed a gun during a scuffle.

Hours before the 2016 Super Bowl was played, a minor mêlée at the Shamrock Bar & Grill, situated at 4919 SE 82nd Avenue of Roses, brought law enforcement officers to the tavern at about 12:30 a.m. on February 7.

Members of the Portland Police Bureau (PPB) Gang Enforcement Team officers conducted a “walk-through” at the outer East Portland bar, after a patron called in to the 9-1-1 Center, reporting the fight earlier that evening.

The Gang Team members were looking for a man who witnesses said they saw flashing a gun.

“Officers noticed a man acting very nervous in the bar, so they contacted him,” reported PPB Public Information Officer Sgt. Pete Simpson. “During the contact, officers located a loaded handgun in his pants pocket,” he added.

That man, 33-year-old Rontonio Augustus, was arrested and booked into the Multnomah County Detention Center (MCDC) at 1:16 a.m. on charges of being a Felon in Possession of a Firearm, Unlawful Possession of a Firearm, and Possession of a Firearm. Additionally, Augustus was held on a parole violation, on his earlier conviction of Attempted Murder.

“Officers learned that the handgun was stolen in a car prowl,” Simpson later remarked.

At his arraignment on February 8, all three new charges against Augustus were lodged and upheld, with combined bail set at $10,000. However, Augustus remains in custody at Multnomah County Inverness Jail without bail – on the parole violation charge.
