As one of the first of its kind in outer East Portland, the Parkrose Farmers Market continues to help provide an oasis of fresh produce in an area known as a “food desert”.

The Parkrose Farmers Market, started several years ago in a Parkrose High School parking lot, wrapped up its second season on September 12 at its new location — just east of the BiMart store on NE Halsey Street, in the Russell neighborhood.

Here, with Parkrose Farmers Market Manager Ron Glanville, is volunteer Donna Barker.

“This was a pretty good year, to start with,” began the market’s manager, Ron Glanville.

“It quieted down a little bit as the season went on,” Glanville told East Portland News. “We had many steady vendors that we like and whom we enjoy seeing every week. And, judging by the response from our shoppers, they were pleased with the selection of vendors at the market.”

It’s important to keep this outer East Portland market going, Glanville remarked, “Because it’s a good networking opportunity for the neighbors. We also help ease ‘food security’ issues there are here in the neighborhood.”

Jason Blevins of SweetHeart Bake Shop reminds those who have grown fond if their goodies that they will remain at the Montavilla Farmers Market through the end of October.

“And, as a volunteer, nonprofit organization, the market also helps our community,” Glanville added.

“The funds we make from this market go to support local organizations,” he went on. “We provide food for the Human Solutions Family Shelter, and give food and funds to organizations that are food related.”

Asked about next season, Glanville said he believes that the Parkrose Farmers Market will indeed return next year. To get involved, e-mail Glanville at manager@parkrosefarmersmarket.org. Or, stay in touch by visiting their website: CLICK HERE.
