The second traffic-crash-related fatality investigated by the Portland Police Bureau (PPB) Traffic Division Major Crash Team in 2018 took place on February 1 at 12:51 a.m. on SE Stark Street at 148th Avenue, when a hit-and-run driver struck and killed a pedestrian.

Other drivers stopped to give aid and call for help, but the driver sped away.

When officers and emergency medical personnel arrived, they found a woman lying in the roadway. “She was suffering from catastrophic injuries; medical personnel determined the woman was deceased,” reported PPB Public Information Officer Sgt. Chris Burley.

The PPB Major Crash Team begins their investigation.

Initial findings by the Bureau’s Major Crash Team were that the woman had been in the crosswalk on the east side of SE 148th Avenue; and witnesses agreed that she was crossing with a green “walk signal”, and not against the light, Burley said. “The driver and vehicle that struck the woman left the crash location; officers searched for the vehicle, but have not located the vehicle or driver.”

The Bureau has not released information regarding the suspect make and model believed to be involved in this crash.

The investigation is ongoing, and more information will be provided as it continues. Anyone with information about this fatal incident should contact the Portland Police Bureau Traffic Division at 503-823-2103.
