When 36-year-old Lionell Maurice Hayes was stopped by a Portland Police Bureau (PPB) officer in the Powellhurst-Gilbert neighborhood, just after midnight on October 7, he might not have known it was just for a traffic violation. Perhaps he had a guilty conscience.

“The PPB Gang Enforcement Team initiated a traffic stop at SE 130th Avenue and Powell Boulevard for a traffic infraction,” said PPB Public Information Officer Sgt. Pete Simpson. “The driver attempted to speed away from the officers, pulled into the parking lot of an apartment, and ran from the vehicle.”
But as the driver – later identified as Hayes – ran, he dropped a handgun and continued running from officers. “Hayes was quickly apprehended,” Simpson said. “Officers discovered the suspect was in possession of small amounts of methamphetamine and heroin.”

Police have charged 36-year-old Lionell Maurice Hayes with numerous offences.
Hayes was booked into the Multnomah County Detention Center (MCDC) at 1:05 a.m. on multiple charges: Felon in Possession of a Firearm, Possession of a Loaded Firearm, Attempt to Elude on Foot, Possession of Heroin, Possession of Methamphetamine, and Driving While Suspended (Misdemeanor).

Currently lodged at MCDC in lieu of $35,000 combined bail, Hayes is also being held without bail on a “Multnomah County Justice Hold”.
