The hopeful thinking behind Portland Bureau of Transportation’s “Vision Zero” initiative took another blow on December 19 after dark, when yet another pedestrian was struck and fatally injured on NE Sandy Boulevard near 141st Avenue.
Portland Police Bureau (PPB) North Precinct officers were dispatched to the scene at 6:24 p.m. that evening to investigate a “Pedestrian Struck-with Injury” incident.
“When officers arrived they found an adult male suffering from life-threatening injuries,” a PPB spokesperson revealed. “The man was taken to an area hospital, where he later died.”
The driver of the involved vehicle remained at the scene.
The investigation into this crash continues, on into the night.
The PPB’s Major Crash Team (MCT) was sent to the area and took over the investigation. So far, it has not been revealed just how the fatal accident took place. No citations have been issued so far.

According to the PPB, pedestrian deaths at a 70-year high in Portland, with 31 pedestrian deaths in 2022, so far – and a total of 66 traffic fatalities in 2022.
“It is clear, that despite advances in technology, infrastructure, education and awareness, we are still not solving the problem and our traffic fatalities are at epidemic levels,” the PPB official noted.
There were 67 fatal crashes, 29 involved pedestrians last year, according to PPB statistics.
