The large grassy area and outdoor pavilion at historic Oaks Amusement Park has proven to be the ideal location for the 13th Annual Arab Mahrajan Festival on September 1.
The sights, sounds, and exotic aromas of stewing Middle Eastern food transported visitors at this unique, free cultural event to far-away destinations.
Welcoming guests to the Arab Mahrajan Festival is Sarah Prevost –Treasurer of the Arab American Cultural Center of Oregon.
In front of their organization’s cultural exhibit, Arab American Cultural Center of Oregon co-founder Rima Ghandour joins President Nadia Dahab for a photo.
“Simply put, Mahrajan is the Arabic word for ‘festival’ – and is usually associated with traditional foods, music, dancing, and crafts,” explained Nadia Dahab, President of the Board of the Arab American Cultural Center of Oregon.
“It’s a lot of effort to put this on; but, for us, it’s become a tradition,” Dahab East Portland News.
Shopping the bazaar at the Mahrajan are Aaron Perkins and Sophie Simonard, both from Milwaukie.
Everyone agrees, this festival is all about great food; here, grilling savory dishes, are chefs Zaid and Firas from Cedar Halal Market.
“Especially during these times, having a celebration like this is really important to our community – as well as the broader community in the greater Portland area,” observed Dahab. “Here we celebrate the culture of the Arab community; and, at the same time, we educate and include everybody in our celebration.”
The celebration featured music all day long in the outdoor Pavilion. “And we have a new, larger variety of fantastic food being served here, too,” Dahab pointed out.

“Visitors can also browse cultural exhibits, and visit our businesses, along with talking with people representing nonprofit organizations and governmental agencies, to share every aspect of the Arab American community,” she said.
Throughout the afternoon, and into the early evening, music played, families ate together at the long rows of picnic tables, and everyone enjoyed a peaceful afternoon.
Showing her book Arab, Arab All Year Long – Winner of the 2023 Arab American Book Awards for Children – is author Cathy Camper.
“Especially this year, when communities all over the world are having particularly tough year – including the Arab communities – the best thing that can come from our event is to bring people together in celebration.
“We’re letting people know that this is our culture, and this is what we are all about,” Dahab explained.
