While most folks were in the midst of enjoying a leisurely holiday weekend, a dirty deed was afoot in Parkrose.
Police were tipped off that a possible hostage situation was taking place at a motel along NE Sandy Boulevard about 11:00 a.m. on Sunday, May 29.
But, specific information about which motel the kidnapping situation was taking place – there are several such lodgings along the boulevard – was lacking.
“Officers were told there was a man in a motel room being held at gunpoint against his will,” reported Portland Police Bureau (PPB) Public Information Officer Lt. Robert King. “North Precinct officers responded to the area of Northeast 110th Avenue and Sandy Boulevard.”
Through their investigation officers were able to figure out that the motel in question was the Courtesy Motel at 11324 NE Sandy Boulevard, Room #24, King reported.
While it looked like a suspect was headed for Maddy’s, the individual never made it – and was picked up by police.
“As officers arrived, a suspect was seen walking out of the room and was taken into custody in the parking lot of Maddy’s bar at NE 112th Avenue and Sandy Boulevard,” stated King.
But, the situation got more tense, as a team of officers was getting into position to “loud hail” the room, when a person walked out. “The person was verbally challenged by officers – but went back inside. Officers continued to ‘loud hail’, and five people eventually came out of the room.”
Officers were able to determine that there was, indeed, one man in the room who had been held against his will. “Detectives responded to the scene to continue the investigation; five people were arrested.”
These individuals – 43-year-old Rick James Dudley, 29-year-old Catherine A. Salyers, 45-year-old Rodney Allen Dent, 25-year-old Sean Richard Denny and 28-year-old Santiago Juan Pompa – were arrested, and charged with assault and kidnapping charges. MCDC photos
43-year-old Rick Dudley, 29-year-old Catherine Salyers and 45-year-old Rodney Dent were each booked on charges of Assault II, Kidnap I and Robbery I – each charge carries a $250,000 bail.
Assault and kidnapping charges were also brought against the other two suspects. 25-year-old Sean Denny was additionally cited for Parole or Post Prison Supervision Violation, as was 28-year-old Santiago Pompa – who picked up yet another charge, Possession of Methamphetamine.
“There are some sketchy people who hang around here sometimes,” said Jack, a Maddy’s patron who talked with us later in the parking lot. “The management here keeps a good eye out, but lots of times, people are watching, especially if you hit a jackpot. [The management] can’t do anything after you leave the place.”
“The investigation is continuing,” Lt. King later added. “Anyone with information on this case can call Robbery Detectives at (503) 823-0400.”
